Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has adopted 1-800-GAMBLER as the state’s primary problem gambling helpline. This move aims to consolidate support services under a single, easily remembered number.

Operated by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), 1-800-GAMBLER is recognized as the world’s leading problem gambling helpline in terms of call volume, population served, and geographic coverage. It provides callers with confidential support, professional guidance, and local referrals, ensuring that help is readily accessible to those in need across the U.S.

Starting August 8, 2024, all online gaming platform providers in Michigan are required to feature the 1-800-GAMBLER number in their responsible gaming messages, updating any previously listed helpline numbers. This unified approach is expected to make it easier for individuals and families affected by problem gambling to find the help they need promptly.

“The National Problem Gambling Helpline Network connects individuals struggling with gambling addiction to trained professionals who offer confidential assistance and resources,” stated MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams in a press release.

“By adopting 1-800-GAMBLER as the statewide problem gambling helpline, the MGCB reinforces its commitment to ensuring a safe and secure gaming environment for players across the state by ensuring that resources for treatment and recovery can be accessed quickly and easily.”

The helpline, which also offers text (800GAM) and chat services (1800gamblerchat.org), operates 24/7, ensuring constant availability of support. Although the Michigan Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-270-7117) will still operate, calls made to 1-800-GAMBLER from Michigan will be directed to the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) for localized support.

“An easily accessible helpline is a vital tool in providing problem gambling support services across the country,” said Keith Whyte, NCPG Executive Director. “We applaud MGCB for taking proactive efforts to address the needs of those affected by problem gambling and for recognizing the significance of promoting 1-800-GAMBLER in Michigan.”
